Reservist in the Spotlight
Today (24 June 2020) marks national Reserves Day, where we celebrate all the Reservists throughout the UK and abroad that give up their spare time to serve in our Armed Forces. Reservists play a pivotal part in protecting our nation and make up approximately one sixth of our Armed Forces personnel.
Despite their huge contribution and incredible efforts in balancing their civilian life with a military career, our Reservists often go unnoticed. To recognise the amazing work they have done and continue to do, we wanted to put one of our very own Reservists in the spotlight.
Jason, who works as a Loans Underwriter for the credit union, is also a Leading Aircraftman in the RAF Reserves. We’ve asked him a couple of questions about being a Reservist:
- Why did you become a reservist? I wanted the challenge to do something different, that wasn’t part of my day to day life, spending weekends doing something more meaningful. The RAF Reserves offered me the opportunity to do this, to receive training and qualifications as an MT Driver.
- What is the best thing about being a reservist? It is both fun and challenging, provides transferrable skills to the workplace and is a complete contrast to civilian life. The opportunities are huge and you’ll meet a great bunch of likeminded people from all walks of life.
- What is your proudest achievement as a reservist? Obtaining my driving licence categories (C, C&E, D), ADR (dangerous goods licence) and completing all the military conversion courses during the last 18 months. I’m now qualified to drive some serious pieces of military kit. Not bad for an office boy! Due to this, I will be receiving my 2nd promotion (to SAC/Senior Aircraftman) within the next month or two so watch this space.
- What would you tell someone who was thinking about becoming a reservist? If you are thinking about becoming a Reservist, go for it! Not only will you get a unique experience and acquire new skills, you’ll become part of something much bigger than you’ve experienced before.
